1er « Coutellia »

2023 Notre première participation au Festival International du couteau d’Art et de tradition « Coutellia » situé à Thiers, Capitale de la coutellerie.

Pour cette Première, nous avons aussi souhaité nous inscrire au « Concours de la plus belle pièce ».

Depuis plusieurs années, Joël sculpte sur la mouche, la partie écrasée en forge qui se situe à l’extrémité avant du ressort.

Il avait à cœur depuis un certain temps la sculpture en 3 dimensions dans la lame du couteau.

Ce concours était donc l’occasion rêvée d’essayer de créer une pièce exceptionnelle !

Dans un premier temps, il a décidé de raconter son histoire à travers ce couteau…

1st « Coutellia »

2023 – Our first participation in the International Festival of Artistic and Traditional Knives « Coutellia », held in Thiers, the capital of cutlery.

For this debut, we also chose to enter the « Most Beautiful Piece » competition.

For several years, Joël has been sculpting on the « mouche » — the forged, flattened part located at the front tip of the back spring.

But he had long dreamed of sculpting in 3D directly into the blade of a knife.

This competition was the perfect opportunity to try and create an exceptional piece!

As a starting point, he decided to tell his own story through this knife…

Un projet mûrement réfléchi

Tout a commencé par un croquis :

Poser ses pensées et ses idées sur le papier a été la première étape.

Passionné de la nature qui nous entoure, Joël a été inspiré pour réaliser une scène animalière se déroulant dans la forêt.

Avec une lame assez imposante de par sa taille, la sculpture de la nature, des animaux à représenter et par-dessus toute la complexité de la scène concernant les bois de cerf, la position du duel entre les deux mâles, etc…

bref, nous savions que la confection de ce couteau en 3D allait nous demander plusieurs semaines de travail intense.

Joël a donc décidé de commencer à dessiner la forme générale de sa future pièce directement sur le métal.

A Well-Thought-Out Project

It all started with a sketch:

Putting his thoughts and ideas down on paper was the first step.

A true nature enthusiast, Joël was inspired to create a wildlife scene taking place in the forest.

Given the large size of the blade, the sculpture of the natural setting, the animals to be depicted, and—above all—the complexity of the scene involving the antlers, the posture of the duel between the two stags, etc…

In short, we knew that crafting this 3D knife would require several weeks of intense work.

Joël then decided to begin by drawing the general shape of his future piece directly onto the metal.

The Beginning of a Long and Delicate Adventure

Every great piece begins with a vision — a story taking shape in the artist’s mind before it ever touches the steel.

Un premier perçage à la perceuse à colonne ainsi qu’à la lime.

A first drilling with the drill press, followed by careful shaping with a file.

Au fur et à mesure de la fabrication, les détails et l’harmonie du couteau devenaient de plus en plus visibles.

Après avoir troué de part en part aux endroits voulus, la scène animalière se dessinait déjà davantage !

Il fallait maintenant s’atteler aux détails…

À l’aide de fraises en Carbure de Tungstène et en Acier rapide, avec des tailles pouvant aller de 1 mm d’épaisseur jusqu’à 5 dixièmes et/ou 2 dixièmes, il fraise et polit…

Petit à petit, son travail prenait vie…

As the work progressed, the details and harmony of the knife became increasingly visible.

After drilling through the metal at the desired spots, the animal scene began to take shape more clearly!

Now it was time to focus on the details…

Using tungsten carbide and high-speed steel burs, ranging in size from 1 mm thick down to 0.5 mm and even 0.2 mm, he carefully carved and polished…

Little by little, his work came to life…

Aucune pièce n’est soudée, ni rapportée et tout est intégralement sculpté dans la masse.

Plusieurs échanges entre nous ont été nécessaires afin de pouvoir se rapprocher un maximum de la réalité : postures, musculature, regards, formes etc…

Des détails microscopiques qui apporteraient un ensemble très réaliste une fois le couteau terminé.

Un grand merci à M. Charles Roulin qui a aussi inspiré et conseillé Joël pour la réalisation de cette pièce.

Tombé dans la marmite à son tour et se trouvant particulièrement à l’aise avec la sculpture en 3D, Joël a pris plaisir à réaliser, en plus, deux oiseaux dans un Chêne : un détail de 2 mm !

No piece is welded or added on; everything is entirely sculpted from the solid metal.

Several exchanges between us were necessary to get as close as possible to reality: postures, musculature, expressions, shapes, etc.

Microscopic details that contribute to a highly realistic overall effect once the knife is finished.

A big thank you to Mr. Charles Roulin, who also inspired and advised Joël during the creation of this piece.

Having “fallen into the cauldron” himself and feeling particularly comfortable with 3D sculpture, Joël also enjoyed carving two birds in an oak tree—a detail just 2 mm in size!

Un premier jet qui fut une réussite ! Après plus de 50 heures de sculpture et de patience, le résultat était plutôt concluant !

A first attempt that was a success! After more than 50 hours of sculpting and patience, the result was quite promising!

Un mécanisme atypique

Vous connaissez certainement le « système à pompe arrière », une belle mécanique pour garder la vocation de l’outil et de sa fonctionnalité.

Pour l’originalité de la pièce, Joël a eu la belle idée de sculpter un Pic Épeiche dans le balancier qui servirait de poussoir.

Un oiseau que l’on peut apercevoir dans nos forêts et qui entrait totalement dans le thème de la scène.

Agrippé à un arbre et prêt à taper dessus avec son bec, sa posture se prêtait parfaitement à l’harmonie du couteau.

An unusual mechanism

You’re probably familiar with the “rear pump system,” a clever mechanism designed to preserve the tool’s function and purpose.

For the originality of this piece, Joël had the brilliant idea to sculpt a Great Spotted Woodpecker on the lever that acts as the release button.

This bird, commonly seen in our forests, perfectly fits the theme of the scene.

Clinging to a tree and ready to peck with its beak, its posture harmonizes beautifully with the overall design of the knife.

Une sculpture qui apporte au couteau la finalité d’une scène complète qui foisonne de détails et débordant de vie !

A sculpture that gives the knife the completeness of a full scene, teeming with details and bursting with life!

L’authenticité en harmonie avec la scène

Comme je vous l’ai dit au début, Joël a voulu partager son histoire à travers ce couteau.

Mais quelle histoire ?

Voici son aventure sur le thème de la nature…

» Lors d’un stage pour devenir Garde Forestier, j’ai trouvé sur mon chemin un couteau perdu (et en très mauvais état) dans la nature et c’est de là que tout a commencé…

Il m’est alors venu l’idée du choix pour le thème de ce couteau !

Il résume bien mon histoire autour de la Coutellerie :

– Les sculptures dans la lame d’un duel entre deux cerfs, de deux oiseaux dans les arbres et du ressort orné d’un Pic Épeiche, nous rappellent bien la nature.

– Le manche décrit la rencontre avec ma femme qui m’est toujours d’une aide précieuse et qui l’a encore été tout au long de cette belle aventure. »

Authenticity in harmony with the scene

As I mentioned at the beginning, Joël wanted to share his story through this knife.

But what story?

Here is his journey inspired by nature…

“During a training course to become a Forest Ranger, I found a lost knife (in very poor condition) on my path in the wilderness, and that’s where it all began…

That’s when the idea for the theme of this knife came to me!

It perfectly sums up my story around knifemaking:

The sculptures on the blade of a duel between two stags, two birds in the trees, and the spring adorned with a Great Spotted Woodpecker remind us of nature.
The handle represents the meeting with my wife, who has always been a precious support to me and has been throughout this beautiful adventure.”

Un modèle que j’ai donc décidé d’appeler « LE CHAMPÊTRE »

Les sculptures réalistes sont réalisées au binoculaire, sous des lumières à fibre optique, à l’aide de fraises Tungstène plus dures que l’Acier normal.

Les plus fines ne mesurent que 2 dixièmes de millimètres d’épaisseur.

Prix du jury au « Festival International COUTELLIA »

Cette participation au Concours avec cette pièce sculptée en 3D a permis au plus grand nombre d’en apprécier les moindres détails et pour Joël la belle réussite de son premier essai !

A model that I decided to name “LE CHAMPÊTRE”

The realistic sculptures are crafted using a binocular microscope, under fiber optic lighting, with tungsten burrs harder than regular steel.

The finest burrs measure only 0.2 millimeters in thickness.

Awarded the Jury Prize at the “COUTELLIA International Festival.”

This entry in the competition, featuring a 3D sculpted piece, allowed many to appreciate its intricate details, marking a proud and successful first attempt for Joël!
